Score
On the 20th of October, I was the first to host a night walk together with Naomi de Bruijn. For this night we came up with a Hunger walk. This walk was inspired by my question of how to take care of myself and others, we used the metaphor of hunger to look within and start listening to your needs.
After the hunger walk, there was a moment of fasting, which resulted in a lot of internal reflections. In this document, you will find a collection of these fragments, thoughts and reflections that ended up leading to the final score:
Volume 2. Intestines.
They are fragmented, just like a distracted walk, where one moment you are stuck in your thoughts and suddenly distracted by your surroundings.
With my score I would like to create a moment where you are nowhere else than in that place, becoming one with your surroundings.
Hunger Walk
volume 1.
1.
We are a hungry wolfpack.
What are we hungry for and what can we hunt?
2 .
Collect the harvest and share what you were hungry for.
Did you still your hunger?
3.
Now hunt for each other, to establish a collective sense of a wolfpack.
4.
Write down the ingredients of your harvest.
What did you hunt for yourself and what did you hunt for the other?
Hunger Walk with the class
Together with Naomi, we created a score. Collectively as a wolf pack we wander through the night with our hunger and on the hunt. Looking inwards or outwards we try to locate the hunger and still it. From eating oneself to our surroundings and/or our pack. Halfway through the hunt, we share the harvest. What are we hungry for? Is the hunger stilled? Raising the question what is our collective hunger or (how) can we hunt for each other? The night ends with sharing the ingredients of the hunger and harvest.

Hunger Walk alone
In Oisterwijck I decided to take a hunger walk on my own.
Asking myself the question what am I hungry for? Without the distraction of the other, or in a role of facilitating.
It was the last morning of a weekend away, and I just finished a breakfast buffet at a hotel. I felt the opposite of a physical belly hunger, but I was still longing to walk in nature.
I started my walk in awe of the surprising surrounding. It started in the forest and within 5 minutes I entered a region of fens. But instead of being able to enjoy myself, my mind was on my boyfriend who had to stay at the hotel to work, instead of joining me on this walk. I felt sad he had to miss out on this nature. I came across a bench with a view over the lake, that was perfect for him to work on. I went back to the hotel, picked him up and dropped him off at the bench.
Only from that moment on I felt I could enjoy myself and focus on the walk and nature. I heard a woodpecker and saw over 10 different mushrooms.
The photo of the mushroom infested with mould was my reference point for answering the 'cannibalism' question during Stranded. FM.

Hunger walk with my mom
I did a Hunger walk with my mom in the forest in Brussels (my home town). I hadn't seen my parents in 2 months, and this walk was the first proper moment to have a long conversation with my mom.
We started the walk with a coffee and a croissant. We continued our walk, guided by the paths and our intuition.
We came across a sweet chestnut tree, and we harvested around 25 sweet chestnuts, the same evening we roasted them and peeled them together.
Suddenly we came across a tree with a written sign on it. It said:
"I am the one who listens, whisper a secret in my ear".
and so I did.
Later on, we came across another tree with a written message. This time the rain made the message disappear. It said something along the lines of:
"I am the one who disappeared.."
These messages gave my mum and me a hunger for adventure, for the continuation of the walk we were on the hunt for more messages on trees. Sadly we did not find any more.
Reflection
The hunger walks are driven by the same main question I have for my artistic practice. How can I take care of myself and others?
So the walk first provided a space for "my needs" aka my hunger and then after the first harvest, a moment for our "collective needs" / hunger comes up. This is also to create a sense of togetherness.
In conversation with my aunt who is an artist, I explained to her the Hunger Walk. She shared that she can only find her hunger within when she is in her atelier, with no stimuli.
It made me wonder about the influence of stimuli on my walks and my surroundings.
I felt after the walks or during the walks that I was creating meaning for something that might not have such meaning. I enforced a concept on a moment.
While in the unexpected moment that I found the notes on the tree with the walk with my mom, a hunger for adventure came to me. We hoped to come across more secret tree messages.
I am worried that by being on the search for this hunger during a walk, you enforce an inner need. Is it possible to find inner hunger/ needs in these walks?

If I try to find meaning in walks, should I start doing the opposite, to find meaninglessness in these walks?
This is 'A space without a use' by Georges Perec, Species of spaces (1974). It made me think of finding meaning in the meaningless. When you walk without a goal, that becomes the goal itself. Is there a possibility to create or do something without meaning?
Could this be a base for my score of a walk?

If you need to go out, while you are walking on the street, focus the attention on the sound produced by the rubbing of your clothes, the jingle of your keys, the coins in your pockets or the movement of the objects inside your bag."
"Imagine your body as a unique sound object that dwells freely in the space that is crossing: this movement allows you to get in touch with the widest background soundscape that the environment is offering you.
The farthest sounds the mobile spots of a map in movement with you and in constant update, while the smells represent the colors crossing this mobile map.:
I was intrigued by this example of a score because it creates a setting while leaving a lot of space for interpretation. It also talks about the body as part of the surrounding.
Walking from Scores - Elena Biserno

Horrowitz taught how a walk is so much more than from going A to B.The moment I am thinking about going on this walk,
I already started the walk.
It made me feel better that in all my moments of reflecting on the walks and thinking about future walks, I was already 'walking'.

Heel actieve situatie opneemt.

I'd like to dedicate this to all the creative, righteous children
I have some food in my bag for you
Not that edible food, the food you eat, no
Perhaps some food for thought
Since knowledge is infinite
It has infinitely fell on me so um...
Erykah Badu - Apple tree
This song came to me, in a moment of waiting and not knowing.
Our belly has limited space, but the input that our surrounding gives us seems to be infinite. But is there such a thing as infinite, just like meaningless, I wonder if this can exist.
Can I ask people to become a stomach so they can digest 'food for thought'?
Intestines
Volume 2.
You are what you eat
you are your digestive system.

In humans, the small intestine is about 6 meters,
the large intestine is about 1.5 meters.
You carry your intestines with you like a coiled rope.
Now imagine you roll out your intestines, in front of you.
Your intestines create a path, a path of 7,5 meters.
Become one digestive system with your surrounding, your body flows over into the surrounding without a clear beginning or end.
Your intestines are open and exposed to its surroundings, opening your senses. Feed yourself by smell, sounds and views.
Do you chew, bite and swallow?
Do you lick, chew and spit?

Digest and ingest your surroundings, and let them pass through you.
Take as much time as you need for your intestines to devour everything on their way.

Now at the end of these 7,5 meters, it is time to roll your intestines back into your body. Take your time to let it sink in, like with a good meal. How much time do your intestines need to process this?
Now take your rolled-up intestines with you, are they full or empty?

Optional:

If you have difficulties imagining your 7,5 m intestine in front of you, you can buy a rope of a little longer than this length. Tie it around your waist, and throw it in front of you. Now you can walk your intestines.
With multiple people, it is possible to tie your imaginary intestines together and walk a prolonged distance.
